| | | Recorded in 2003, Nashville USA | | | It’s About Time is an unusual work. Although the songs are performed with a keen ear for radio-friendliness, blending elements of pop, country and southern-fried gospel, they were crafted in unusual personal circumstances. In 2003, singer-songwriter Rob Winch — whose talents on vocals, guitar and bass are showcased here — had just emerged from a personally challenging decade, surviving two bouts of cancer and open heart surgery. The batch of new songs he produced were recorded with a team of crack musicians in Nashville, thousands of kilometres from Rob’s Wellington home and studio. It has made for a rich record. Some of the tracks are immediate in their impact while others give up their pleasures gradually — the last cut, for example, may take a few listens to get behind its deceptively simple exterior. |
